As summer winds down, it’s time to start thinking ahead to the fall. For parents and students, this means getting #BackToSchool. If you’re a parent of a college student, or a student yourself, you may be wondering about the best options for your insurance. At Quincy Mutual Group, we understand how important insurance coverage can be, especially for young adults. To help ease the process, we’ve put together answers to some of the top insurance questions students and parents have.
1) Will my homeowners insurance cover my college student’s belongings when they are away at school?
The homeowner policy provides coverage for a full-time student, who was a resident of your household before moving away to attend school, provided the student is under the age of 24 and is a relative of yours; or under age 21 and in the care of you or a resident relative. Coverage may be purchased for other types of students who were residents of your household prior to moving out to attend school, such as part time students or students 24 and older. Another consideration is to speak with your local independent agent to determine if it is appropriate to purchase a renters policy for your college student. Not only are these policies affordable, they also provide comprehensive coverage for personal belongings and liability protection.
2) My child is taking a car to school. Will they be covered under my car insurance?
If your child’s permanent residence is still your home, then yes, they can still be covered under your car insurance policy. Even if your child is not taking a car to school with them, leaving them on your policy is a smart move that can protect them if they borrow a friend’s car at school or when they come home and borrow your car.
3) My child is getting their own car. Will they still be covered under my car insurance?
If your child is getting their own car and will have their name on the title, then they will need to purchase their own insurance policy.
4) Are there any ways to save money on my insurance program for my college bound child?
This is where your independent insurance agent can definitely help! Ask about things like good student credits and student away at school discounts to see where you can start saving money on your insurance program!
