As summer winds down, our roads become busier in new ways. Families are squeezing in last-minute vacations, commuters are settling back into their routines, and children are preparing to head back to school. It’s the perfect time to slow down and stay alert behind the wheel.

Longer daylight hours mean more people are outside well into the evening. Walkers, runners, cyclists, and families enjoying parks and neighborhoods may still be active during what many drivers consider the “evening commute.” Bright skies can create a false sense that hazards are easier to spot, but pedestrians and cyclists can appear unexpectedly at crosswalks, intersections, and driveways.

As schools reopen, expect increased traffic around neighborhoods and school zones. Children may be excited, distracted, or unfamiliar with traffic patterns, making it especially important to reduce your speed and stay focused. Always stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights and be prepared for pedestrians crossing where you may not expect them.

Whether you’re returning from a summer road trip or simply driving across town, a few simple habits can make a big difference:

    • Put away distractions and keep your eyes on the road.
    • Slow down in residential areas, school zones, and busy intersections.
    • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
    • Watch carefully for cyclists and allow them plenty of space.

Be extra cautious during dusk, when changing light can make it harder to see others. A little extra patience goes a long way. By staying attentive and sharing the road, we can help ensure everyone—from vacation travelers to students walking to school—gets where they’re going safely.

Let’s make the transition from summer to back-to-school a safe one for everyone.
